My father outlived both his wives. Clarice died in 1993 and was buried with her sister Agnes Julia at Fairfield. My father died in 1997 and was cremated and interred with his first wife, my mother Edith Fanny.
I retired early, in March 1996, and between 1999 and 2007 Daphne and I spent four years living on a yacht in Turkish waters, and four years living in an apartment in the Turkish city of Antalya.
I became driven to find as much information about my roots that I could, particularly my mother whom I barely remember as she died when I was only six years old.
With Daphne's parents also dead, they had both died in 2000, I decided to include both sides of her family in my research. My reasoning for this being that historical records of births and deaths in South Africa, particularly amongst the African and coloured families, are very difficult to find.
I decided to research as much as I could whilst there were still family members alive who could contribute information from memory. Particularly as Daphne's family had great historical context in South Africa, and possible roots in Ireland.
